Blizzard Beat Omaha on Last Second Touchdown

2010-04-24 -

Green Bay, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard found another way to win a game as time expired. Last week, kicker Tino Amancio kicked a game winning field, this week Jake Phillips found Scott Burnoski in the back of the end zone as time expired to give the Blizzard (7-1) a 50-49, win over the Omaha Beef (2-4).

Green Bay Blizzard quarterback and reining player of the week, Jake Phillips left off right where he did last week. On the Blizzards first drive of the game Phillips led Green Bay down the field over the Omaha Beef’s defense. Phillips was 3-3 on the drive for 18 yards. The drive was capped off on a Randy Bell one yard touchdown run.

The Beef came back and answered, right away after the Blizzards defense had some mental mistakes. Ben Sanky found Luke McArdle going over the middle and he went for a 30 yard touchdown after he ran through arm tackles from the Blizzard defenders. The Beef missed the PAT and the Blizzard led 7-6.

After the Beef missed a field goal, BJ Hill caught the missed kick and took it down to the 11 yard line. Phillips found Daniel Robinson for a 11 yard touchdown that put the Blizzard back in the lead. The Blizzard missed the PAT and led 13-6.

The Beef went down and tied up the game after the drive was kept alive after the Blizzard got called for a defensive hold. Sanky found Mo Avery for a six yard touchdown. This was Sanky second touchdown pass of the day and tied the game at 13-13.

After both teams scored a touchdown, and the game tied at 20 Green Bay decided to break the tie. Phillips hit Randy Bell on a dump down pass and Bell did the rest. Bell went 45 yards on the reception for the touchdown. He had help with great down field blocking by the wide receivers. The Blizzard regained the lead 27-20.

Omaha had an answer right away for the Blizzard. Sanky completed his third touchdown pass to Avery on a six yard play to tie the game at 27. This was Avery’s second touchdown reception of the game.

Green Bay had an answered right back to regain the lead. Randy Bell found the end zone on a two yard rush for his second rushing touchdown of the game. This gave the Blizzard a 34-27 lead, which they took into half time. Bell had 94 total yards in the first half and scored three touchdowns.

After halftime Omaha came out and tied the game up. On the opening drive of the second half Sanky found McArdle for a seven yard touchdown to tie the game at 34-34. This was the second time in the game that these two connected for a touchdown.

Green Bay did not trail for long, as they marched down the field to answer the Beef’s score. Randy Bell found the end zone on a 14 yard touchdown run. This was Bells third rushing touchdown of the game.

The Beef came and answered Bells touchdown with a 19 yard field goal that cut the Blizzards lead to 41-37.

The Blizzard started to drive on their next position, but the drive stalled and ended after Phillips threw an interception as he was going down to the ground. The Beef could not answer and tried to kick a field goal but Maurice Simpkins blocked the field goal to put the Blizzard in scoring position at the 10 yard line.

With the drive starting at the 10 yard line the Beef’s defense stepped up. Omaha defense stood tall and help Green Bay to a field goal attempt. The Blizzard missed the field goal but the Blizzard still held the lead at 41-37.

When the Beef got the ball back they made Green Bay pay for the missed field goal. Omaha started the drive with short quick passes that took them down the field. The drive stalled and they had to settle for a field goal. The field goal cut the lead to one point at 41-40.

Green Bay looked like it was going to extend their lead on their next position. The Blizzard drove the ball down to the five yard line. They handed the ball off to Bell who was stopped at the line and then elected to try to throw a touchdown pass but was picked off by the Beef.

Omaha looked for a quick answer after the interception as Sanky overthrew his receiver on a deep pass. The drive stalled by Shane Longest hit a field goal that was near 50 yards to put the Beef on top 43-41. This was Omaha’s first lead of the game.

On Omaha’s kickoff, Blizzard BJ Hill came up with a big kick return. He was pushed out of bounds by the Longest. This gave the Blizzard great field position. Green Bay tried to get the running game going with Bell but he was stopped for a loss and Green Bay had to settle for a field goal, which put them back on top, 44-43 with 48 seconds remaining in the game.

The lead did not last long for Green Bay as Omaha answered right away. Leaving 13 seconds on the clock Sanky found Avery for a touchdown to put the Beef up 49-44. Omaha decided to try a two-point conversion that failed.

With only 13 seconds left, the Beef kicked off and on the kickoff got called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which gave the Blizzard amazing field position. As time expired, Phillips rolled to his left and threw a pass to the back of the end zone to Scott Burnoski. Burnoski pulled the catch in over three Omaha defenders to win the game for the Blizzard, 50-49.
