Slaughter Squeaks by Blizzard

2010-05-08 -

Green Bay, WI – The Green Bay Blizzard (7-2) were on the wrong end of a game winning field goal. The Chicago Slaughter (4-4) made a game winning field goal as time expired to beat the Blizzard 46-43.

The Slaughter slashed their way to an early lead over the Blizzard when Randy Hutchinson found De’Cody Fagg on a touchdown pass. The PAT was no good and Chicago was ahead 6-0. The lead was short lived because the Blizzard answered back on a Jake Phillips 35 yard touchdown pass to Scott Burnoski. With Tino Amancio’s extra point being good Green Bay took the lead, 7-6.

Chicago answered back and took the lead at 13-7. The Blizzard looked like they would answer when they got down around the goal line but Phillips threw three incomplete passes. Green Bay lined up for a field goal but Amancio missed the field goal and the game stayed at 13-7.

When the Slaughter had their first drive in the second quarter, they moved the ball down the field. They were looking to extend their lead on a field goal by Chris Nednick but he missed it wide right and the score stayed at 13-7.

The Blizzard took the lead early in the second quarter when Phillips found Lawrence Bady on a 27 yard touchdown. The PAT was good and Green Bay led 14-13.

The Slaughter answered right back on their next drive. Chicago’s running back Jared Payton took a hand-off for a touchdown but was waved off on a penalty. That did not stop the Slaughter from scoring on the drive. On the next play, Hutchinson, found Fagg for his second touchdown. They completed a two point conversion to put their lead at 21-14.

Chicago tried to fool the Blizzard with an on-side kick but Green Bay recovered and started the drive with good field position. They had to settle for an Amancio field goal to cut the lead of the Slaughter to 21-17.

The Slaughter looked to extend their lead but Nednick missed a 30 yard field goal. Green Bay looked to take the lead before halftime but on the first play of the drive Phillips found Arlandus Hood fumbled to give the Slaughter the ball. Nednick redeemed himself by making a 32 yard field goal as the half expired to extend the Slaughters lead 24-17.

Green Bay received the ball to start the second half. The drive stalled and they had to settle for a field goal attempted. The 50 yard field goal was good after it hit the cross bar and bounced in to cut the Slaughter led to 24-20.

On the Slaughters next drive Hutchinson was driving in to score but Hutchinson was picked off by Maurice Simpkins, who returned it 54 yards for a touchdown. This put the Blizzard up 26-24.

The Blizzard defense came out hitting hard after the interception return for a touchdown and the Slaughter turned the ball over on downs. Once Green Bay got the ball back they had great field position. The drive stalled and the field goal attempted was missed wide right. The Blizzard failed to extend their lead but still led 26-24.

Green Bay held the Slaughter scoreless during the third quarter but the Slaughter had a chance to score on a field goal but the Blizzard blocked the kick. Green Bay had a first and goal at the three yard line and they handed the ball to Randy Bell who was tackled one yard from the end zone. On the next play, Darius Jones run in for the touchdown to extend Green Bay’s lead to 33-24.

The Blizzard defense looked to have the Slaughter stopped on their first drive in the fourth quarter when they had Hutchinson pinned back and it looked like they would have a sack but Hutchinson found Tavares Woodley for a touchdown to cut the Blizzard lead to 33-31.

Green Bay looked to be adding to their lead after Phillips found Patrick Rouzard. This put the Blizzard within the five yard line. The drive ended when Phillips scrambled and then threw an interception that the Slaughter returned for a touchdown and gave them the lead at 37-33. The Slaughter went for a two-point conversion but it failed.

The Blizzard came and back and answered the Slaughter. Green Bay drove the ball down the field and scored when Phillips found Burnoski scored his second touchdown of the day to put the Blizzard up 40-37. This lead did not last long because the Slaughter went down the field and scored to put them ahead 43-40 on a Woodley touchdown run.

Green Bay looked to go ahead of Chicago when they had a first and goal at the six yard line. Green Bay was stopped on three rushing attempts and were held to a field goal attempt. Amancio hit a 19 yard field goal to tie the game at 43-43.
