Game Preview: Green Bay at Sioux Falls

Blizz Logo

With a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs on the line, the Green Bay Blizzard will travel to South Dakota to take on the Sioux Falls Storm on Friday, June 23rd. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.

Green Bay (6-5) is coming off of a Week 14 bye. In their most recent game action, the Blizzard upset the Quad City Steamwheelers 45-38 at the Resch Center in their final home game of the season.

Sioux Falls (6-5) narrowly escaped with a road win in Tulsa, beating the Oilers 35-34 in their Week 14 matchup.

With both teams sitting at 6-5, Friday's game has significant playoff implications. Sioux Falls currently holds the fourth and final playoff spot, due to their better conference record. If the Blizzard win on Friday night, Green Bay will leapfrog the Storm and take the final playoff spot heading into Week 16.

The two teams have faced off twice already this season, in back-to-back weeks in April. The Blizzard won the first matchup 47-41 in Week 5 in Sioux Falls after trailing by two scores heading into the fourth quarter. That win marked the first time in franchise history that Green Bay won on the road in Sioux Falls. The Storm came to the Resch Center just five days later  and downed the Blizzard 55-47 to even the series at 1-1.

Blizzard QB Ja'rome Johnson scored five total touchdowns in each of the previous matchups against the Storm, but has been sidelined by a knee injury for over a month. QB Max Meylor has stepped in and not missed a beat, leading the team to a 3-1 record in his time as the starter. Regardless of who starts on Friday, the Storm defense will make things challenging for Green Bay. Sioux Falls has given up the second fewest points per game in the league this season and has also recorded the most interceptions.

The Blizzard defense has also stepped up as of late. In their last five games, they've allowed their opponents to score just under 10 fewer points per game than they gave up in their first six games of the season.

Friday's contest starts a four week road game stretch to close out Green Bay's regular season. Every game will be crucial in Green Bay's quest to advance to postseason play for the first time since 2019.
