The Green Bay Blizzard travel to Moline, IL to take on the Quad City Steamwheelers for the third and final time this season, with Green Bay looking to get the season series sweep.
Quad City started the game with the ball and fired on all cylinders, determined to avoid the sweep. It took the Steamwheelers only four plays to find the end zone, with QB Judd Erickson connecting with WR Ka'Ron Ashley for an early 6-0 lead. Green Bay's first possession of the game fell short as they turned the ball over on downs. Quad City capitalized on this opportunity, aiming to extend its lead. Erickson once again found Ashley, putting the Steamwheelers up 12-0. Although the Steamwheelers' 2-point conversion was no good, kicker Kyle Kaplan extended their lead by converting on a Deuce. At the end of the first quarter, the score stood at 14-0.
Green Bay started the second quarter with the ball and scored their first points of the game with a 17-yard field goal from K
Andrew Mevis, making it 14-3. Ka'Ron Ashley continued his standout performance, completing the hat trick and securing his third receiving touchdown, extending Quad City's lead to 21-3. The Blizzard, seeking to stay competitive, gained momentum with a 42-yard return by
Jalyn Cagle, who then scored on the next play, narrowing the gap to 21-10. The Steamwheelers would then get the ball back, but it would not be for long as DB
Ravarius Rivers continued to prove his case for IFL Defensive Player of the Year with his sixth interception of the year. To close out the half, Kaplan and Mevis each kicked field goals, bringing the score to 24-13 in favor of Quad City.
The Blizzard opened the third quarter on a high note with a rushing touchdown from RB E.J. Burgess, narrowing the score to 24-20. Green Bay's defense took the field for the first time in the half, determined to keep their team in the game, and successfully forced a missed field goal, maintaining the score at 24-20.
Green Bay had a decision to make to start the fourth quarter; ultimately, on a crucial fourth and five, they decided to go for it but came up short, giving the ball back to the Steamwheelers. Quad City, aiming to regain momentum, drove down the field and scored their first points of the half with a 16-yard field goal from Kaplan, extending their lead to 27-20. With the Blizzard down only one score, QB
Max Meylor sucked the air out of the building with a rushing touchdown to tie this one up for the first time all night at 27-27. However, Quad City would respond with a rushing touchdown of their own by way of RB Edward Vander. The Steamwheelers were back on top, 34-27. Green Bay needed a touchdown and drove down the field on their next drive. They faced a crucial fourth down and decided to go for it but failed to convert, turning the ball over to Quad City. The Blizzard defense held strong on this possession, forcing the Steamwheelers to attempt a pivotal 46-yard field goal. Kaplan nailed it right down the middle, making it a 10-point game. The Blizzard faced a difficult situation. The offense marched down the field, but with five seconds left on the clock, Meylor fumbled the ball on their final play. This sealed the game, allowing Quad City to secure a 37-27 victory and avoid the sweep.
Green Bay (10-3) continues their season-ending road trip with a visit to Oklahoma to face the Tulsa Oilers (4-8) for the second time this year. A win in Tulsa would secure a home playoff game in Green Bay. Meanwhile, Quad City (6-6) heads to Lowell, Massachusetts to battle the Pirates (6-6) for the third seed in the Eastern Conference standings.
