The Green Bay Blizzard took down the Tulsa Oilers 55-50 Saturday night in Tulsa to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the win, Green Bay improved to 7-6, while Tulsa fell to 1-13.
Tulsa received the opening kickoff and scored less than a minute into the game on a 24-yard Dalton James touchdown run.
Green Bay responded on their first offensive possession, marching down the field and scoring on a hard-fought Shaq Curenton touchdown. Newly signed Blizzard kicker Jared Wood missed the PAT attempt, giving Tulsa a 7-6 lead.
The Oilers extended that lead on their next two possessions, as QB Andre Sale tossed two touchdown passes. Tulsa entered the second quarter with a 20-6 lead.
Green Bay opened up the second quarter scoring on a touchdown pass from Max Meylor to Terrence Smith. Wood's kick failed, making it an 8-point game.
16 seconds later, Sale found Ka'Ra Higgins for a touchdown, giving the Oilers a two possession lead once again, 27-12.
Meylor tightened the game up on a rushing touchdown, but the Blizzard two-point conversion failed.
Just as all the momentum seemed to be on Tulsa's side, Green Bay DB Ravarius Rivers picked off Sale and returned the interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Meylor found Marquise Irvin on the two-point conversion, which brought the Blizzard within one, 26-27.
Tulsa answered, scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion of their own with just over a minute left to go in the first half, making it a nine-point game.
Meylor rushed for another TD in the closing seconds of the first half, and again found Irvin for the two-point conversion.
Tulsa entered the half with a one-point lead, 35-34.
Almost 11 minutes into the third quarter, Sale opened up the second half's scoring on a rushing touchdown.
In the final seconds of the third period, Smith scored his second TD for the Blizzard. Meylor connected with Irivin for their third successful two-point conversion of the night, tying the game at 42 going into the final quarter.
Tulsa went up by one score on a James touchdown run, giving the Oilers a 49-42 lead.
Eight minutes later, Meylor found Mike Green Jr. for a 42-yard touchdown. Steve Newbold rushed for a successful two-point conversion, giving Green Bay their first lead of the night, 50-49, with just over four minutes left in the game.
With 1:15 remaining, Tulsa found the endzone one last time, but failed to convert their two-point attempt, making the score 55-50.
Meylor led the Blizzard down the field and found Newbold for a TD with three seconds left, putting the Blizzard up 56-55. Meylor found Green for the final two-point conversion of the night, extending Green Bay's lead to 58-55.
Tulsa attempted a hail mary with one second remaining, but came up short, giving the Blizzard a 58-55 road victory.
Green Bay will face the Quad City Steamwheelers on the road next week, needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023.
