Week 6 Recap vs Sioux Falls Storm

Blizzard Text Logo No White

In this Week 6 matchup, the Sioux Falls Storm traveled to Green Bay to take on the Blizzard. Sioux Falls came in looking to get their first win of the season, but the Blizzard were just too much on this Friday night as Green Bay got their third win in a row, beating the Storm 48-35.

This game started out with the Green Bay offense taking the field first, with QB Max Meylor back under center for the Blizzard. Meylor showed how big he can be for this offense as he faked the defense with a read option and walked into the end zone to put the Blizzard up 6-0. Sioux Falls responded quickly as mobile QB Billy Hall weaved through the Green Bay defense to put them up 7-6.

Turnovers were a big part early on and all throughout the rest of the game. In the First Quarter there was an interesting turn of events where WR Lowell Patron fumbled on the 5-yard line as the Blizzard were looking to score and Sioux Falls recovered. On the very next play, Billy Hall threw an interception to LB Jaylan Alexander. Patron made up for his fumble as he caught a touchdown after the turnover to put the Blizzard up 14-7 at the end of the First Quarter.

To start the Second Quarter there was yet another turnover; this time a muffed snap by the Storm recovered by the Blizzard. The Blizzard, not being able to do anything off the turnover, turned the ball over on downs and Sioux Falls took that opportunity to go down and score as Hall hit WR Kentrez Bell to knot it up at 14 apiece with 6:06 left in the half. After a good drive for Green Bay, they were able to take the lead when the Blizzard were able to execute a tush push to go up 21-14 with 51 seconds left in the half. Green Bay was able to get the ball once more before halftime, as there was yet another fumble by the Storm, but Green Bay's field goal attempt by new Kicker Andrew Mevis was blocked.

To start the Second Half there was yet another botched snap by Sioux Falls and Green Bay was able to recover it. They took the turnover and turned it into points as Patron, who ended his night with 6 receptions for 104 yards, got in for his second touchdown of the day, catching a pass from Meylor to make it 28-14, Blizzard. On the next drive Sioux Falls brought out a jumbo package and Defensive Lineman Claude Davis caught a 5-yard pass from Hall to put the Storm within one score at 28-21. The Blizzard then used a 9-minute drive to their advantage as Meylor completed a pass to Receiver Demetrius Moore to give Green Bay a two-score lead at 35-28.

Until the 7-minute mark in the game, the Fourth Quarter was defined by back-and-forth scoring between these rivals. Sioux Falls would score on their first possession, followed by a Blizzard touchdown on their first possession, only to be outdone by Sioux Falls coming back with another score. The new kicker in town for Green Bay, Mevis, was able to ice the game as he made field goals on back-to-back  possessions for the Blizzard to seal the victory 48-35.

Next week, Green Bay (3-1) is at home to take on the Iowa Barnstormers (0-3) for their second matchup of the year as the Blizzard celebrate Yooper Night! Green Bay took the first matchup during Week Two, so Iowa is coming in looking to even up the series.

For Sioux Falls (0-4), they will be hosting the Massachusetts Pirates (4-0) In Fargo, ND as this is also their second matchup with each other this season with the Pirates taking the victory in Week Three.
